Auden’s Kitchen – Contemporary American Cuisine, Comfortably

On Wednesday night, Auden’s Kitchen opened to the delight of many fans of Bruce Auden’s Riverwalk restaurant, Biga on the Banks.  The new Northside restaurant with head chef Patricia Wenckus features a menu of comforting foods at reasonable prices.

Starters range in price from $4.50 to $9.50 and include Chicken Fried Gulf Oysters, Hot and Sticky Wings, and Potted Chicken and Duck.  In addition to the common ceasar and the trendy wedge, other salad options include a spinach salad with poached shrimp; the “Beetroot”, made with roasted beets, goat feta, pistachios, and sherry vinaigrette; and the “Chop Chop”, a chopped salad with chicken and pancetta.

The kitchen’s Wood Stone oven produces a variety of pizzas, priced between $9 and $12.75.  The Tomato and Cheese is topped with both pulled mozzarella and cotija; and the Mushroom and Arugula is made with Fontina.

Burgers and sandwiches are also available.  For a vegetarian option, they offer the Vegetable Wrap with pesto cream cheese, portabella mushroom, zucchini, carrot, and artichokes.

Pastas and “Big Plates” include a broad cross section of comfort foods.  Some items include Wood Roasted Chicken, Fish of the Day and Chips, Chuck’s Linguini and Clams, and Beef Short Ribs.  None of these dishes is priced above $15.75.

The menu is augmented with a chalk board of daily specials.  The bar offers a selection of affordable wines, as well as domestic and imported beers and ales.  For those curious about the inner workings of the kitchen, ask to be seated at the front line for a close view.  Otherwise, enjoy the rest of the restaurant’s inviting design.

For a sweet close to a meal, they offer desserts such as Guadalupe Peak Lemon Pie with brown sugar meringue and Chocolate “Cappuccino”.

From now until Feb. 14, they are open for dinner only, but on the 15th, the regular hours will start.  They will not be open for Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 7th.
