My name is Seri and I’m a relationship counselor. Being in this field for over 7 years, I’ve witnessed quite a lot of victories and defeats between couples.

Basically, relationship counseling is all about helping couples resolve troublesome issues that put a lot of stress and tension in their relationship.

My duty is to help couples, like romantic partners or husbands and wives, come into terms with their differences and conflicts.

The goal of the counseling process is to enable them to reach a certain level of understanding from where they can start finding suitable solutions to their issues and problems.

Relationship Counseling is all about helping couples overcome their issues, differences and conflicts.

Making Connections through Effective Communication

As a relationship counselor, I know how crucial healthy communication is. I’ve also witnessed a wide range of scenarios wherein couples encounter challenges in their relationships over issues with workable solutions.

Examples of these issues are work-related concerns, stress levels, financial constraints and various unforeseen events. Here are some of them;

  • A housewife having issues with the work schedule of her husband who works as a doctor hospitalist
  • A work-from-home wife who feels neglected by her husband who works as the most in-demand public adjuster Miami property owners rely on
  • A jobless husband who feels insecure with how much his career-driven wife is earning in the advertising field
  • A stressed-out middle-aged couple facing business bankruptcy
  • A newlywed couple whose new house has been badly damaged by a hurricane

Such issues can be managed through effective communication and solution planning. Thus, their relationship doesn’t have to suffer the consequences.

All these couples need is proper mediation in order to find logical and workable solutions to their problems without compromising on their relationships.

As a relationship counselor, I believe that as long as the problem doesn’t involve deception, cheating, irreconcilable differences and serious crime, it can be resolved through proper mediation, therapy and communication.

As a relationship counselor, it is my responsibility to help couples find solutions to their problems and issues in order to save and manage their relationship.

What Makes Communication Important in Relationships?

Communication is a vital element in every relationship. Whether we’re dealing with romantic relationships, family relationships or the kind of relationship we share with our friends and colleagues, communication is always crucial.

The relevance of talking and connecting with other people through chats and conversations has paved the way for thriving industries like TheChatlinenumbers, social media apps and instant messaging platforms.

Apparently, it is only by way of communicating our thoughts, feelings and ideas that we are able to express ourselves completely. And by doing so, we can achieve a certain level of understanding in our relationships.

Hence, having the means to communicate effectively can result to healthy and harmonious relationships. And it is the best way to resolve conflicts, manage problems and understand others in a logical way.

The Basic Foundations of a Relationship

What are the most important elements of a relationship? How can you make a relationship work?

When we hear this question, out minds automatically generate the quickest and most basic responses. In an instant, we can think of love, trust and respect as the best answers.

Without a doubt, these are all correct. In fact, love, trust and respect are the basic foundation of any relationship and one cannot exist without the other.

For instance, you cannot love your partner without giving the trust and respect that he/she deserves. Needless to say, for a relationship to work and prosper, these three virtues must always be present.

The basic foundations of a healthy relationship are love, trust and respect.

But how can we achieve love, trust and respect in our relationships? It all boils down to one thing and that is communication.

Right from the beginning of a relationship and all throughout its course, it is only by way of talking and communicating with our partners that we are able to establish its foundation.

In fact, a relationship itself is born through effective communication and proper expression of one’s thoughts, feelings and ideas. When two people understand each other, a relationship or connection between them develops.

And as a relationship counselor, I’ve seen the value of communication in a lot of relationships and partnerships. In every success or defeat, communication between two parties remains to be one of the most relevant and crucial elements.

When Does Talking Becomes Necessary in a Relationship?

We can think of multiple scenarios wherein talking becomes necessary in a relationship.

And it’s agreeable that it’s the best way to maintain your connection with your partner and the only way to recognize each other’s importance.

Constant communication and “agreeing to disagree” contribute to a healthy and fruitful relationship.

Constantly talking to each other accounts for a lot of things like assurance, security and understanding. And even though an open communication is something that should naturally exist in a relationship; there are some situations when talking becomes even more crucial.

So when does talking become necessary in a relationship?

To Manage Individual Differences

Talking is the most effective way to manage differences between couples.

Differences in terms of beliefs, personalities and personal views should be managed by way of compromising. And, yes, to come up with reasonable compromises, a serious talk between the two parties involved is important.

As a relationship counselor, I’ve seen couples who experience serious conflicts over trivial matters such as; what to eat for dinner and whose personal taste is better in decorating a home.

Open communication is important in order to manage individual differences and to discuss matters about the relationship that require immediate attention.

To Manage Financial Issues

The financial aspect of a relationship should never be taken for granted. Couples must be able to come up with a suitable arrangement when it comes to their finances.

They must agree on “who pays for what”, “who manages the budget”, “when to access more funds” and so on.

According to survey conducted by the American Psychological Association (APA), as much 31% of American couples identify money as the major source of conflict in their relationship.

Based on my experience, a lot of relationships turn bitter due to constraints about money and other financial concerns. While others are able to overcome this conflict, some relationships actually go straight downhill.

The main factor that spells the difference between success and defeat is open and proper communication about the issue at hand.

Communication between couples is important to avoid issues from escalating to a serious level.

To Manage Insecurities and Uncertainties

No relationship is ever so perfect that neither party goes through some insecurity or uncertainty at some point.

It is natural to come across these thoughts and feelings while in a relationship because you and your partner are two different individuals.

There will always be prettier and smarter women around and there will always be far richer and more accomplished men in this world.

When you go to parties, it may seem like other girls look flashier than you or other guys appear more attractive. The same thing goes when you use social media.

I’ve also encountered sexually-dissatisfied couples who confess to watching porn or calling phonesexnumbers to get in the mood for sex or to feed their fantasies.

These are all real scenarios that happen between couples. And they can cause tension to the relationship especially when “looking” escalates to “interacting” and “interacting” escalates into a “connection”.

Such actions can trigger insecurities, self-doubts and self-insufficiency. However, communicating these with your partner (and exerting your own efforts) can help you manage the issue and come up with healthy resolutions together.

Time to communicate is important between couples to manage certain issues such as time, money, intimacy and feelings of jealousy and neglect.

When Does Talking Become Untimely and Unnecessary in Relationships?

Talking can solve a lot of relationship issues but only when done properly and rationally. It is important that the parties involved are in their right elements and are able to express themselves in a logical manner.

To make conversations fruitful, timing is important.

However, we must recognize that communication doesn’t always involve talking.

It also involves a whole lot of listening, feeling and understanding. And that’s when trust and respect comes into the picture.

It is important to recognize the right time to talk and the right time to give each other some breathing space – but only for a certain period of time.

Couples encounter a series of problems. And there are times wherein it’s best to delay communication for a while to give each other time and space to calm down and understand the situation better.

We must accept that relationships go through different phases. Just like the changing of the seasons, we also encounter a series of changes throughout the course of our relationship.

And sometimes, understanding the situation is the best thing we can do to maintain healthy boundaries.

So when does talking become unnecessary or untimely in relationships? Let’s find out.

When Trying to Overcome Feelings and Emotions

As humans, it is within our nature to go through a roller-coaster of emotions. Sharing these with our partners may only complicate matters.

Don’t feel guilty. Even though we’re in a relationship, we are still entitled to our own boundaries as long as we’re not cheating or deceiving our partners.

And as long as it’s for the best, it is acceptable to keep some personal issues to ourselves. Remember, there are some battles that we have to fight alone – like temptations.

Even though we are in a relationship, there are some battles that we need to face alone in order to spare the person we love.

So when confronted by our own emotions, it is acceptable to spare our partners from what we’re going through and to simply allow ourselves to realign our elements the best way we can.

Example, you’re finding yourself drawn to another person or developing feelings for another. As long as you don’t have the intention to cheat, it’s best to overcome your emotions on your own to avoid complicating the situation.

Battling with your feelings may not be easy but you can make your life and relationship less complicated by not entertaining them while you’re still committed.

When Words Are Not Necessary

Maintaining our connection with our partners doesn’t always involve words. Sometimes, a warm hug or an affectionate gesture is all it takes to express how much we care.

An example is the grieving process – like losing a loved one, dealing with a failure or losing a job. When we see our partner going through a rough time, our presence could be more than enough to comfort and reassure them.

We don’t need to say a lot of words to express how much we care or to show our support. Being right beside them, holding their hand and respecting their pain is more than enough to communicate love and understanding.

There are times wherein our silence and presence mean more than words.

Sometimes, our silence, presence and support mean more than any amount of words.

When Emotions Get High

Talking and discussing matters is not always advisable when emotions are high. Things can easily get out of hand and may result to arguments.

This can potentially do more harm than good to the situation.

The best thing to do when emotions are high is to give each other time to calm down and to gather up your thoughts. Issues are best resolved in a more relaxed state and with a clear mind.

Take some time alone first and determine what issues are worth discussing.

Remember that even in relationships, we have to choose our battles. That’s why we need to invest on a lot of patience and understanding.

In this way, we can be more rational and it would be much easier to arrive at a compromise wherein it doesn’t matter who wins and who loses anymore.

What’s more important is that we’re able to overcome the issue and move on from there.

It’s difficult to communicate in a rational way when emotions are high. Giving each other time and space to calm down and think can lead to better outcomes.

Why Communication is Important in Relationships

There are truckloads of reasons that account for the importance of relationships.

We can think of a lot of motives but the bottom line is that; talking, communicating and expressing our thoughts and feelings are the main reasons why a relationship exists in the first place.

In every healthy relationship, talking to each other is part of the norm.

It is how things work between couples – updating each other through text messages or phone calls during the day and chatting over dinner or sharing the events of the day while cuddled up together.

Communication never goes outdated in any type of relationship. Even among couples in a long distance relationship, constant phone chats can make a whole lot of difference in maintaining intimacy and connection.

We must keep in mind that the longer we are in our relationships, the more important communication is in keeping the romance alive.

Here are the top reasons that make communication important;

Talking and spending time with your partner is one way of expressing appreciation and commitment.

It’s one way of showing appreciation

Appreciation is one of the most important elements of a healthy relationship. Constantly showing appreciation towards our partners contributes to security, assurance and intimacy.

Giving complements for even the simplest things, hugging our partners, celebrating small victories and sharing sweet kisses are just some of the ways we can show appreciation to the person we love.

Enables you to share your world with your partner

Sharing our thoughts, learning and experiences with our partners is a healthy way to maintain good communication in a relationship.

It can make our partners feel that they are part of our world and that their presence matter to us.

So don’t think that there’s nothing much to talk about with your partner.

Talking about a movie you watched, the songs you like, the books you’ve read or the latest happenings in your workplace are all nice topics that you can share with your partner.

Taking the time to talk to your partner and spending quality time together promotes mutual respect which can strengthen a relationship.

Encourages mutual respect

Healthy communication encourages mutual respect. It means that you acknowledge your partner’s presence.

Having regular and quality conversations are sometimes enough to overcome feelings of neglect.

For example, constantly checking on your partner is a good way to show respect as well as asking them if they are comfortable with the situation.

Respecting our partners means never ignoring them, acknowledging their ideas and opinions, understanding their feelings and needs, and responding appropriately.

This can only be done through proper and healthy communication.
